A Beginner’s Guide to Growing Microgreens Indoors

Microgreens are plants that are days old after the emergence of the first true leaves together with the cotyledons. They are a great entry-way to hydroponics and urban farming; you can even grow these foods right at your windowsill. This beginner’s guide will equip you with the knowledge and steps to transform a simple tray into microgreens you can add to your next meal.

Microgreens are often considered a superfood due to their high nutrient density. Research suggests that they contain essential vitamins and minerals at levels exceeding their mature counterparts. A range of microgreens can also be grown in a range of vibrant colours, textures, and flavours, adding a unique element to culinary dishes.

How to Grow Microgreens:

The beauty of microgreens lies in their ease of cultivation. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Flat trays: Opt for trays with drainage holes, and stack these on top of flat trays without holes.
  • Potting mix/grow mat/cocopeat: Choose a sterile, lightweight material to promote a clean growing environment.
  • Microgreen seeds: Use untreated seeds or those specifically labelled for microgreen cultivation. Popular varieties include radish, sunflower, and arugula.
  • Light source: A sunny windowsill or grow lights are essential for the proper growth of microgreens.
  • pH meter and pH adjusters: To ensure the nutrient solution is at the optimal pH for microgreen growth.
  • Nutrients (NH Leafy Formula): Specifically formulated for leafy greens to enhance growth and nutrition.
  • Spray bottle: Ideal for gently watering your microgreens.

Planting and Care:

    1. Prepare the Tray:
      • Fill your selected container with 1-1.5 inches of sterile potting mix or cocopeat, and ensure it is evenly spread.
      • If using a grow mat, cut and fit to your tray exactly.
    2. Adjust the pH:
      • Before adding water, test its pH using a pH meter. Adjust the pH to between 5.5 and 6.5 using pH adjusters, ensuring optimal nutrient uptake.
      • Using the spray bottle, moisten the growing media but avoid waterlogging.
    3. Seeding:
      • Evenly scatter your seeds over the surface, ensuring good seed distribution without overcrowding.
  • Blackout Dome:
    • Cover the microgreen tray with another flat tray to hasten germination and keep the moisture. Expose seeds to light when germinated. 
  1. Light and Moisture:
    • Place the tray in a location that receives at least 6 hours of indirect sunlight daily or under grow lights for 8-10 hours.
    • Keep the soil consistently moist by regularly misting it with nutrient-rich water. Avoid letting the growing medium dry out or become soggy.
  2. Nutrient Addition:
    • Prepare a solution of NH Leafy Formula at 1 mL per liter of water and adjust the pH to 5.8-6.5. Use this solution for subsequent watering once the seedlings establish their roots. 
    • Ensure that the solution is added through bottom watering to avoid moisture on the leaves. 
  3. Germination and Growth:
    • Expect germination within 1-7 days, depending on the type of seeds. 
    • Continue providing light and moisture as the seedlings grow.
    • Rotate the tray occasionally to ensure even light exposure and growth.
  4. Harvesting:
    • Harvest your microgreens typically within 7-14 days after germination, depending on the variety.
    • Use sharp scissors to cut the greens just above the growing medium.

By incorporating the NH Leafy Formula and carefully managing the pH, your microgreens will benefit from enhanced growth and nutrient content, making them even more beneficial and tasty.

Tips for Success:

  • Choose the Right Variety: Start with easy-to-grow microgreens like pechay, radish or mustard before venturing into more delicate varieties.
  • Temperature Control: Maintain a comfortable room temperature between 18-24°C for optimal growth.
  • Air Circulation: Provide adequate air circulation to prevent mold growth.
  • Enjoy and Repeat! After harvesting, you can replant the tray with new seeds for a continuous supply of fresh microgreens.

With a little planning and these simple steps, you’ll be garnishing your meals with these tiny plants full of flavour and nutrition, all cultivated from the comfort of your own home.
