Global Efforts Towards Sustainable Farming Practices
Global Efforts Towards Sustainable Farming Practices
Organizations globally are focused on eliminating harmful farming practices, particularly excessive chemical pesticide and fertilizer use, due to concerns about environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and public health risks.
For instance, the European Commission is proposing a complete ban on the use of chemical pesticides in public areas, such as parks, schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, as part of its broader effort to cut chemical pesticide usage by 50% by 2030.
This initiative is a key element of the Farm to Fork strategy which aims to create more sustainable and eco-friendly food systems across the European Union (EU). While the EU does not intend to ban chemical pesticides entirely, the 50% reduction target will be legally binding for member states.
The proposal also includes nature restoration targets which aim to repair 20% of damaged ecosystems by 2030. This is believed to benefit farming yields and support biodiversity, particularly by reversing the decline of vital pollinators like bees.
However, this proposal has sparked debate. Some member states argue that the timing is inappropriate due to ongoing food security concerns. Contrastingly, some, particularly Green politicians, advocate for a complete end date for pesticide use. At the same time, farmers’ unions support reducing chemical use but stress the need for affordable and effective alternatives before imposing stricter rules.
In line with this push for sustainability, NutriHydro is aligning its approach by advocating the integration of biocontrol products like SUBAMO and BEBASS. These products aim to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.
NutriHydro aims to incorporate these biocontrol products in agricultural practices that support environmentally friendly farming methods while ensuring crop protection and health. This aligns with the EU’s goal of reducing chemical usage while maintaining efficient food production.
