Jenbert Sales: A Growth from Research to Rooted Success

Jenbert Sales: A Growth from Research to Rooted Success

This article highlights Jenbert Soto Sales, a dedicated hydroponics grower from Camarines Sur, Philippines. His journey from research assistant to passionate farmer currently involves two setups: hydroponics and aquaponics.

At 25, Jenbert owns “Sales Hydroponics & Garden” in Camarines Sur. His interest began after college in 2023 when he worked on hydroponically cultivating lettuce and aquaponics for fish. Hydroponics includes immersing plant roots in a nutrient-rich solution or growing media, whereas aquaponics uses waste produced by aquatic animals that microorganisms convert into nitrates for plant nutrition. This experience drove him to look for online resources and engage with his current mentor, Engr. Christina Padua. He used his funds to build a greenhouse and launch a business, which immediately attracted local support.

Setting up the greenhouse and selecting the best lettuce varieties were challenging. Currently, the garden has a 750-head capacity with various lettuce kinds grown utilizing the NFT and Kratky systems. Despite experiencing hurdles such as tip burn during sunny seasons, these young farmers manage their personal lives alongside their farming pursuits.

The farm incorporates many practices to produce high-quality yields:

  1. Seed Germination: They evaluate and control the quality of various seed varieties before storing them properly.
  2. Foliar and nutritional Application: They apply biostimulants through foliar application and lettuce nutritional solutions at half strength for seedlings and full power for mature harvests.
  3. UV Plastic and Insect Nets: These are used to cover the roof and walls of the bamboo and timber greenhouse.
  4. Hydrometer: They monitor and maintain the appropriate temperature and humidity for lettuce.
  5. pH Level: They use pH-down solutions to keep the water’s pH at 6.0.
  6. Sanitation: They sanitize every item and the entire greenhouse before and after sowing, including the medium.

Jenbert handles marketing through social media, where he often posts updates, images, and short videos of their harvests. To maintain high standards, they avoid selling deficient goods and eat any rejects themselves. With increasing demand from nearby resorts, they want to understand and manage any issues influencing crop quality. Market surveys and experiments assist in determining the best-performing kinds.

Jenbert and his cousin, Vanessa Sales, desire to expand their agricultural business by building another greenhouse to improve output and service additional customers, including a business-to-business (B2B) approach. They also provide training and workshops for aspiring hydroponic gardeners. Jenbert encourages others, adding, “Don’t be scared to create your hydroponics setup. It will be a tough and bumpy path at first, but consistency and determination will eventually smooth it out. Maximize all available resources, including online courses, YouTube videos, and vlogs/tutorials from other growers posted on social media.
