Reservoir Volume Calculator

This reservoir volume calculator accurately measures the active water capacity of your tank based on its geometric shape and operating level. Finding your true working volume prevents chemical dosing errors, guarantees reliable EC interpretations, and protects overall crop health.

Volumetric Calculator

Calculate hydroponic reservoir capacity, actual working water volume, headspace, and fill percentage.

1. Select reservoir shape
Dimension unit
2. Enter tank dimensions
Water depth exceeds the tank height. The calculation has been limited to the tank's maximum capacity.
80% full
Working water volume 200.00 L Based on the entered water depth
Maximum capacity 250.00 L
Headspace 50.00 L
Fill level 80.0%
Volume = Length × Width × Water Depth

Sources of Measurement Error

Error 1
Wall Thickness Error
External instead of internal dimensions Wall thickness can inflate apparent capacity. Always measure interior space.
Full tank height instead of operating height Causes overestimation of actual solution volume. Leave room for headspace.
Tapered or irregular geometry Some containers do not perfectly follow ideal shapes. Volume changes non-linearly with height.
Internal displacement Pumps, fittings, return lines, or root mass reduce free solution volume.
Uneven water level during measurement Disturbed liquid surfaces or tilted reservoirs may produce inconsistent depth readings.

Reminder

Reservoir volume computation is a fundamental technical control step in hydroponic solution management. It supports accurate nutrient formulation, more reliable EC interpretation, and greater consistency in corrective dosing.

Whether the reservoir is circular, square, or rectangular, the governing principle remains the same: use the correct geometric model, measure internal working dimensions, and calculate based on actual operating water height.

Governing Checklist

Select any principle to see a quick visual explanation of correct vs. incorrect layout calculations:

1. Geometric Model Match shape formulas (Cylinders vs. Rectangles)
2. Internal Dimensions Measure internal spaces, excluding thick walls
3. Operating Height Measure only the water, leaving out dry headspace
